Tampa Woman A 'Point Of Light'

YBOR CITY - In honor of Fitness/Nutrition Awareness Month, Gov. Charlie Crist recognized Karen Pesce of Tampa as the Points of Light Award recipient for the week of March 20.

"I applaud Karen's efforts to help Florida's children and parents adopt healthy lifestyles that include daily physical activity and healthy eating habits," Crist said. "Karen's commitment to promoting physical fitness and nutritional education helps Floridians lead healthier lives."

Pesce is a founding member of the Florida Action for Healthy Kids Partnership, a public-private partnership representing education, health, fitness and nutrition. As a volunteer, Pesce wrote a grant that secured $25,000 to assist Hillsborough County with the implementation of its wellness policy. She also co-chairs the Hillsborough County School Health Advisory Committee and is a member of the Pinellas County School Health Advisory Committee, Florida School Health and Education Consortium, Partners in Obesity Prevention, Healthy Together-Tampa Bay and the Hillsborough County Oral Health Collaborative.

In addition to her volunteer efforts, Pesce is executive director of More Health Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing health and safety lessons to more than 1.7 million school-aged children in Hillsborough and Pinellas county schools. Pesce received the award March 20 at the Children's Board in Ybor City.
