TAMPA - For the first time in school history, the Plant High School Varsity Chorale, Symphony Orchestra and band will perform together tonight.
"It's the first time we've have a philharmonic orchestra performing together," said student-teacher Kaitlin Smith, who is working under choral director Bruce Yost. "We're really excited."
The large group of more than 200 students is attempting the Carmina Burana by German composer Carl Orff. The 7:30 p.m. performance will be at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.
Because at times the orchestra parts don't complement the choral parts, the piece can be challenging, Smith said.
"It takes a great amount of focus of the students," she said. "In order for Mr. Yost to even consider this piece, he'd have to have an exceptional group of students to work with."
The students have been working since September on the one-hour piece. The children's choral part will be performed by 40 students from Gorrie, Mabry, Mitchell and Roosevelt elementary schools, some of whom are siblings of the Plant students performing.
Tickets start at $12.50 and can be purchased through the box office at the performing arts center or at www.tbpac.org.
