City considering future of Williams Park pool

Published: August 5, 2009

EAST TAMPA - Williams Park pool is closed indefinitely. But city parks and recreation officials are reviewing long-range options to reopen it.
City officials must first decide whether the pool can be repaired or needs to be replaced.

"That's what we're trying to determine now," parks and recreation director Karen Palus said. "It's in very poor condition."

The pool, 4362 E. Osborne Ave., is one of three that remain closed this summer because of budget cuts, needed repairs or a federally required upgrade.
Roy Jenkins Pool on Davis Islands, Interbay Pool in South Tampa and Williams Park Pool in East Tampa need drain covers mandated by a federal drowning-prevention law. The deadline to have the covers was December 2008.
Palus said the city plans to check the infrastructure of Williams Park pool. Erosion beneath the decking already is an identified problem.

And there is no funding for the pool, Palus said.

Other improvements at Williams Park might be possible. "We're looking at opportunities there," she said. "We're working with the community on that."
