SOUTH TAMPA - The American Legion, Sons of Legion and Auxiliary Post 139 have been sending CARE boxes to U.S. troops overseas for more than four years. Recently they heard from Army Sgt. Michael Genetti who, along with his team, had received the packages for several months.
Genetti wrote to Gail Hayes, head of the CARE box program, saying that while on leave from Iraq he wanted to meet the people who had been supporting him and his team.
On Aug. 1, "Sgt. Mike" and his parents visited American Legion Post 139, presenting the post with an American flag that flew over his base in Iraq on July 4. He told the group how important these boxes are to troops and described their reactions when the packages reach them.
The post had some surprises for him as well.
Sgt. Mike lives in Orlando, so the post made up a pirate's chest filled with pirate treasure, including a T-shirt, Tampa Bay Rays shirt, pirate rum, beads with an Army medal and assorted things to help him remember Tampa.
