TAMPA - Two free receptions will take place in separate locales Friday and both afford an opportunity to meet talented local artists.
The first reception is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at TECO Plaza Art Gallery, where local artist Terry Klaaren is exhibiting 30 original paintings from his past travels to national parks.
During the evening, Klaaren, who is known for his plein air style of painting, will give background stories regarding many of the paintings.
The gallery is at 702 N. Franklin St. in downtown Tampa. Call curator Debra Jo Radke at (813) 767-1600 for details.
Overlapping the TECO exhibit and going a bit later is the opening reception for the annual Bay-area open competition at The Old Hyde Park Art Center.
The list of 77 participating artists reads like a "Who's Who" of the region's talent pool. A total of 124 works will be judged by R. Lynn Whitelaw, director of the Leepa-Ratner Museum in Largo, for the winners of more than $2,000 in cash and prizes. The exhibit runs through March 6
Meet the artists and see the winning pieces at Friday's reception at the center, 705 Swann Ave.
Call the center at (813) 251-3780 for gallery hours and information.
Two Approaches To Landscapes
As part of the Art After Hours Series, the Kotler Art Gallery of the John F. Germany Library presents works by husband and wife artists Gloria E. Barreto and Luis F. Rodriguez through Feb. 27.
Barreto paints in a style she calls CUREABS, or a combination of Cubism, Realism and Abstraction. Rodriguez prefers a more impressionistic approach.
Although their styles differ, both artists focus much of their work on the landscapes of their native Puerto Rico.
Meet the artists and see their work at a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Call For Artists
The Tampa Bay Business Committee for the Arts is looking for professional and amateur artists who are willing to put their talents into creating dust - chalk dust, that is.
In a move to bring the arts closer to where the business action is in South Tampa, the committee is sponsoring a "Chalk Walk" March 19-21.
The theme of the event is "Tampa Bay in the Future," and each artist will have a designated area on the sidewalks of Snow Circle in Hyde Park Village to create their drawing.
For an application, contact Christina Cook at Christina .cook@tbbca.org or got to www.brandtampa.com/ group/chalkwalk and download an application.
Correspondent Esther Hammer can be reached at (813)259-7662 or ehammer@tampatrib.com.
