DAVIS ISLANDS - Members of Casa Cuba, a Tampa social and civic organization, brought "canastilla," which translates to "everything for the baby," for the first Hispanic baby born on Jan. 28. It's part of the club's tradition to do a good deed in honor of Jose Marti, the Cuban national hero whose birthday is Jan. 28.
The group collected gifts, including a crib, mattress, clothes, a car seat, blankets, diapers and baby supplies for a newborn and presented them at Tampa General Hospital. The recipient was Nancy Zelaya of Tampa, who hails from the Brazilian city of Salvador. She delivered twin boys, so the gifts came in especially handy.
