TAMPA - On Jan. 26, representatives from Moffitt Cancer Center visited Mitchell Elementary School to present certificates of appreciation to students who participated in an Art from the Heart project to cheer patients at Moffitt.
Fourth-graders, along with Art Club members, designed and made outfits for 60 teddy bears to be given to patients on the day of their breast cancer surgery.
Other art students decorated gift bags to put the bears in, along with more than 200 get-well cards. Kindergartners helped by decorating teddy bear gift tags to put on the packages.
An annual project at Mitchell since 2005, the program became part of the art curriculum when Pat Knowlton, Mitchell's art specialist, received a bear during her treatment at Moffitt.
Students were rewarded for their efforts with certificates presented by Dawn Greenwood, the "We Care" Patient Bear Program coordinator, and Chrystyna Pospolyta from FACTors, Moffitt's breast cancer outreach and support group.
