UT CAMPUS - In a University of Tampa warehouse every Thursday, volunteers sort and price items for a gigantic one-day flea market.

The money from the sale - and a pre-sale party - will help restore Henry B. Plant's 1891 Tampa Bay Hotel, which now is Plant Hall on the University of Tampa campus.

At age 50, The Chiselers is one of the nation's oldest preservation societies. The all-volunteer group has almost 300 members, of which about 170 are active. They are preparing for the 46th annual Chiselers Market, set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14 at the University of Tampa, 401 E. Kennedy.

Chairs Ruth Tapley and Sterling Remer, along with other Chiselers members, are preparing thousands of items for sale. Items include jewelry, china, silver, collectibles, sporting goods, books, plants and furniture.

"We literally can furnish a house," said Tapley.

Remer said most items are priced at about one-fourth of their original sales price. Many items will be under $10

"Right now, in this economy, we feel like we have more of a demand and that we can fulfill a need in many ways," Remer said.

Chiselers President Glenda Barlow said several of the members' husbands, including Charles Mullen, Bill Martin and her husband, Clark Barlow, test all the electrical items to be sure they work.

The sale also includes a silent auction. About 200 items will be up for bid, including donations of gift certificates from area businesses.

Susie Sanders, chairwoman of the silent auction, said, "We get the cream of the crop. The Chiselers give us outstanding items, some of which are family heirlooms, and we get a lot of stuff from estate sales."

The flea market will be preceded by the 13th Annual Market Preview Party from 7 to 9 p.m. March 13 in the same location. Sandy Harris, Suzanne Strahan and Al Van Voris are co-chairs of the review party. Pat Colvard is the honorary chairwoman.

A cocktail buffet will be served while guests preview items for sale. A live auction at 8 p.m. will include a one-week stay in Cordoba, Spain, a private dinner with wine for six people at The Palm, and a New York Yankee weekend.

Tickets are $50 and may be purchased by calling Robbie Williams at (813) 253-0037.

Barlow said the organization usually raises about $60,000 from the sale and more than $100,000 from the preview party.

Today, The Chiselers will meet at 10:30 a.m. to hear reports about the plans. The meeting also will feature a skit about the group's 50th anniversary.

The group still is seeking donations for the sale and will pick up large ones, such as furniture. Call (813) 253-2027 for donation details. For information on the organization, see www.Chiselers.org.
