Social Events And Fundraisers Are Roaring Into Town

TAMPA - With the Gasparilla season steadily running its course, other groups are gearing up for social events to raise money for various causes.

Some fundraisers are:

• The first Pink Tie Gala will be sponsored by the Florida Suncoast Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The black-tie event will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at TPepin's Hospitality Centre. Erica Riggins, a morning news anchor with Bay News 9, is the emcee. Co-hosts are Melissa Johnson of Bast Floors & Staircases and former Major League Baseball player Fred McGriff.

It will include a cocktail reception, live entertainment, dancing, dinner and an auction. Tickets are $175 each, or a sponsorship is $2,500 for a table for 10. For details, go to www.komensuncoast.org.

•The second Monsignor Higgins Humanitarian of the Year Awards Dinner, benefiting Phoenix Houses of Florida, will be March 5 at Higgins Hall at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. It will be chaired by Ray and Nancy Murray and Dan and Roz Doyle Sr.

This year's award is shared by Frederick E. Fisher and Whitfield M. Palmer Jr., founders of a substance treatment program, which has become Phoenix Houses of Florida. For ticket information, contact Sharon Snyder at (813) 627-0137, ext. 6200, or e-mail ssnyder@phoenixhouse.com.

• The Distinguished Citizen Luncheon will be sponsored by the Gulf Ridge Council Boy Scouts of America. John Ramil, president and chief operating officer of TECO Energy, will be honored at the March 6 luncheon at the Hyatt Regency in downtown. Registration is at 11:45 a.m., with the luncheon at noon.

Keni Thomas, an Army Ranger involved in the "Black Hawk Down" mission of October 1993, will be the speaker. A University of Florida graduate, he now is a Nashville recording artist. For information about an invitation to the luncheon, call the BSA office at (813) 872-2691.

• The Stepping Out Gala will be sponsored by the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation. Using the theme "Imagine," the Fab Four will pay tribute to The Beatles at the black-tie event at 6:30 p.m. March 7 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown.

Daniel J. and Nilda Plasencia are the chairs for the event, where Tino and Marie Martinez will be honored. The St. Joseph's Hospital's Distinguished Physicians of the Year also will be honored. They are Michael Wasylik, Earl Smith and Joseph Levine.

• Cattle Baron's Ball will benefit the American Cancer Society. The country-western dinner, dance and auction, with the theme "Wild Western Nights," will begin at 7 p.m. March 7 at the Port of Tampa Cruise Terminal 6.

USF President Judy Genshaft and her husband, Steve Greenbaum, are honorary co-chairs. Jeanne Marget is the chairwoman.

• Casino Night and Cigar Smoker will be sponsored by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America. The event, which is open to the public, will be from 7 p.m. to midnight March 7 at Hilton Garden Inn, 1700 E. Ninth Ave. The casual event with blackjack and other games will feature food, a cash bar, silent auction and door prizes. Tickets are $25 and are available by calling (813) 878-6800.

Group To Talk About Bring-Back Motions

NORTH The Florida Alpha Parliamentarians Unit of Tampa will meet at 9:30 a.m. March 7 in the banquet room of University Community Hospital, 3100 E. Fletcher Ave.

Women's Club Presents Check

BEACH PARK - Members of the Beach Park Women's Club will present proceeds from the Silver Coffee to Bill Hoffman, executive director of the Hillsborough Education Foundation, at their meeting Friday. .

The 10:30 a.m. event will be at the group's clubhouse, 801 S. West Shore Blvd.

Members will bring covered dishes to share. Georgienne Kramer is the luncheon hostess, assisted by Nancy Blood, Jeanne Clewis, Dottie Hilton, Mary Manelli and Elfriede Moreno. Szu Farrell is in charge of the guest book.

Krewes Plan Annual Poker Run

DANA SHORES - The Krewes of Agustina de Aragon, Brigadoon, Shamrock and Thieves of San Lorenzo will host the third annual poker run benefitting Shriners Hospitals for Children on Saturday. .

Registration begins at 10 a.m.; first bike out at 11 a.m.. The run begins at Egypt Shriners, 4050 Dana Shores Drive. The run stops at Jack Willies, Molly Goodheads, Quaker Steak and Lube and ends at Kahunas in St. Petersburg.

Garden Groups Plan Programs

The gardening season is upon us, and groups are having programs that are free and open to the public. They include:

•The Begonia Society of Tampa Bay at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Tate Distribution Center, 6401 N. 54th St.

Bob Koehler will conduct a propagation program, and light refreshments will be served. First-time attendees will receive a begonia. For information, call Jeanette Hall at (813) 779-7641.

• The Davis Islands Garden Club at 10 a.m. March 4 at the group's clubhouse, 81 Columbia Drive.

•The Beach Park Garden Club at 10 a.m. March 4 at The Beach Park Women's Club, 801 S. West Shore Blvd.

Sorority, Teens Plan Carwash

HYDE PARK - Members of Delta Gamma sorority will team with visually impaired teens for a carwash to benefit the Lions Eye Institute Foundation's Race for Sight.

The wash will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at Tampa Lighthouse for the Blind, 1106 W. Platt St. Suggested donation is $5 for cars and $10 for trucks and SUVs.
