EAST TAMPA - A nonprofit group recently gave 10 students an eight-day trip of a lifetime to New York and Washington, D.C.
Molding Outcomes was founded in 2004 by Karen Willis-Barrett to reduce the school dropout rate and encourage students to stay in school. The organization offers mentoring and special activities including guest speakers, field trips and monthly picnics.
In June the organization sponsored the New York/Washington D.C. trip for 10 students, many of whom never had traveled outside the Tampa area. The students met pen pals from their sister school, Life Sciences Secondary School, and attended the school's high school graduation ceremony. The school, in partnership with Mount Sinai Medical School, encourages the study of health sciences.
Students from both schools toured the Museum of Natural History. There also were stops at the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the 9/11 memorial site, Times Square and the "Today" TV show.
In Washington, the group met with Howard University students, visited monuments at the Mall, and toured The White House.
A 2010 trip for 20 students is in the planning stages.
