Found Works Exhibit Can Be Found At Clayton Galleries

Published: March 4, 2009

Clayton Galleries is hosting an exhibit called "Found Works" by local artist Stacy Rosende. The title refers to the fact that more than 80 percent of the pieces in the show are prints made from found objects, mainly paper and wood. But there's also some cardboard.

"I've actually broken down cartons and boxes and packaging and inked them up and printed them," said the artist in a telephone interview. "Some are straightforward transfers, and some are hand-painted and reworked."

Rosende created a series of monoprints from a Build-A-Bear carton that once held a bear her daughter, Maya Bycuk, 6, had created. "I realized that this was really quite a beautiful object in itself," Rosende said.

For this exhibit, Rosende, a former adjunct professor of art at the University of Tampa, concentrated on making the plain pretty.

"I explored the beauty of everyday objects, things that are very simple and humble that we take for granted," she said. "I think they're sophisticated in their designs."

The exhibit is up through March 21. Clayton Galleries is at 4105 S. MacDill Ave. Call the gallery at (813) 831-3753 for hours and information.

Three Exhibits Open With One Reception

Three exhibits will open with one reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday night March 6 on the second floor of the old Santaella Cigar Factory at 1906 N. Armenia Ave.

In Suite 211 of the building, Tracy Midulla Reller and Kurt Piazza combine talents in a show of complementary styles called "Animals and Machines." Both artists deal with line, shape and form through a minimalist palette of mostly black, white and gray.

Reller's representational drawings of humans and animals often juxtapose the innocent against a worrisome background. Piazza's repetition of geometric forms sometimes imparts chaos, sometimes calm.

The artists' works can be seen at www.tracymidulla.com and www.kurtpiazza.com.

Works by Reller and Piazza will also show up next door, in Suite 210, at the opening of a group show called "Five + 5." Put together by the artist collective known as 5art, the traveling exhibit features the five artists of the collective and five guest artists.

Participating artists in addition to Reller and Piazza are Ariel Baron-Robbins; Cameron Brian; Joe Griffith; Robbie Land; Diran Lyons; Ruth Santee; Jasmine Schurrer; and Atsushi Tameda.

This is the second year for the traveling group exhibit, which will stay up at the 5art gallery through April 3, after which it will travel to galleries in Georgia, Tennessee and California. Go to www.five-art.com for details about the artists and the exhibit.

In the long reception hall on the second floor, works by Shane Hoffman and Daniel Mrgan will be on display only during Friday's reception. Refreshments will be available, and music will be provided by disc jockey Oblivion.

Hoffman Porges Gallery in Ybor City will host a one-night fundraiser that includes live music, food, wine and an art auction. Participating artists are Nancy Henderson, Donna Morrison, Saudia Wadud and Carlton Ward.

Doors open to the public at 7 p.m. Friday. Admission is $20.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the University of South Florida Hope House for Eating Disorders.

The gallery is at 1907 E. 7th Ave. Visit www.hpartgallery.com for more information.

The reception is free; donations are welcome. Call (813) 340-9056 or e-mail art.five@gmail.com for more information.
