Shoppers Bring Donations For Children's Home Thrift Store

SOUTH TAMPA - The women came loaded with shoes, purses, dresses and household items.

Their donations filled The Children's Home's van and soon will be merchandise in the nonprofit organization's thrift store, which opened Saturday.

Georgette's Boutique & Shoe Salon, 141 S. Dale Mabry Highway, hosted a shopping night Feb. 19 to collect the donations and offer the donors appetizers, champagne, a goodie bag and a discount.

The special event was the brainchild of Amy Hamill, 23, a University of Tampa graduate student. She organized the night as a project for a marketing class.

"I love The Children's Home, and everything just fell into place," Hamill said. "I want to make this a yearly event. Maybe have it before Gasparilla. This year that wasn't possible."

Krewe Of Shamrock Sets St. Patrick's Day Party

YBOR CITY - The Krewe of Shamrock will have its annual St. Patrick's Day party at 6 p.m. Friday at the Cuban Club, 2010 Avenue Republica de Cuba.

The party, open to the public, includes Irish foods, music, prizes and dancing. It benefits charities supported by the krewe.

Fashion Events Are Plentiful

WESTSHORE - Spring clothes are appearing in stores, and two events showcase the clothes while raising money for local charities. They are

•Dressing To The Nines, a fashion trends show and luncheon presented by Neiman Marcus, as part of the store's Spring 2009 Fashion Week events.

The event will be at the store at the International Plaza from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 11. Tickets are $25 per person with proceeds benefitting the MacDonald Training Center, a nonprofit organization serving adults with disabilities in the Tampa Bay area since 1953. • Fashion Funds the Cure, benefiting the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

The event, from 6 to 9 p.m. March 11 at Westshore Plaza's Saks Fifth Avenue, will include an evening of shopping, food and drinks, a silent auction and fashion show. Some of the models are girls who have battled cancer.

This year's celebrity host is Carson Kressley. one of the stars of "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" on the Bravo Network. He now is host of Lifetime's makeover show "How To Look Good Naked." Other local celebrities expected to attend are players from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lightning and Rays as well as local media personalities.

Former Foster Child Featured At Luncheon

DOWNTOWN TAMPA - Andrew Bridge will be the keynote speaker at the March 13 Child Abuse Awareness Luncheon, sponsored by the Friends of Joshua House.

Bridge spent 11 years in Los Angeles County foster care, then earned a scholarship to Wesleyan, became a Fulbright scholar and graduated from Harvard Law School. Andrew's memoir, "Hope's Boy," is the account of his life with his mother, a young mentally ill woman, of her efforts to keep and care for him and of his life in foster care without her.

The event is from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Tampa Marriott Waterside, 700 S. Florida Ave. Tickets are $50 each, and corporate sponsorships are available. For information, contact DeDe Grundel at (813) 263-3469.

Sword Of Hope Sponsors Latin Dinner

The American Cancer Society's Sword of Hope Guild will host a Latin Gala Dinner at 7 p.m. Friday at the Valencia Garden Restaurant, 811 W. Kennedy Blvd.

It will feature Latin entertainment and a silent auction. Proceeds will assist The American Cancer Society's ROCK camp (Reaching Out to Cancer Kids). Established in 1976, ROCK. Camp is the first camp for children with cancer in the United States. The residential camp, in Eustis, is for children ages 7 to 16 who are being treated for cancer.

Pianists Featured At Friday Musicale

Pianists Anne Pray, Ivanka Stefanov and Lou Young will perform duets, duos and trios at Friday's meeting of the Friday Morning Musicale at the Musicale Building, 809 Horatio St.

The program, at 11 a.m., will include a sonata by Mozart, Slavonic dance by Dvorak, "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Fats Waller and the "Theme from the Warsaw Concerto" by Addinsel.

Also on the program is "Toujours La," an award-winning piano solo that received a copyright in 1914 and recently was found in a pile of old music by musicale member Julia Moseley. The composer, Helene Steer-Saxby, 1851-1926, who lived in Hyde Park, was a director of the Friday Morning Musicale and president of the Florida Federation of Music Clubs in 1920.

A study course, The Life of Chopin, will begin at 10 a.m. After the program, a lunch will be served by hostesses Mary Bosy and Kim Michel.

The program is free and open to the public. The lunch is $5, and reservations are needed by calling (813) 258-4752.

Quilter Featured At Luncheon

The South Tampa Christian Women's Club and Stonecroft Ministries will host a Celebrate Spring Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 11 in the Fellowship Hall of South Tampa Fellowship Church, 5101 Bayshore Blvd.

Kay Tobelman Doran, businesswoman, quilt teacher and artist, will explain how she stitched the raw edges of life together like pieces in a quilt. She also will talk about her quilts and invites everyone to bring their favorite quilt to display. Children from Paideia School of Tampa will entertain.

USF Offers Info About Returning

CHANNEL DISTRICT - The University of South Florida will sponsor a Return To Learn workshop with information about returning to college.

The free event will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at USF's Downtown Center, 1101 Channelside Drive, Suite 100. Registration is at 5:30 p.m.
