Sykes wins Rotary award

DOWNTOWN - Tampa Downtown Rotary Club awarded the Rotary Service Above Self award to John H. Sykes, founder and chairman emeritus of Sykes Enterprises, at its May 19 meeting.

Sykes, recognized with many awards for his entrepreneurial spirit and community involvement, was selected as the annual recipient for the award because he exemplifies the Rotary ideal of serving others and giving back to the community.

"We do not do things in life for our own self glory," said Sykes after receiving the award. "We receive glory when our master says, 'Good and well done, loyal servant.'"

Sykes founded Sykes Enterprises in 1977 as a small technical engineering firm with three employees. Today the firm has 34,000 employees worldwide providing business process outsourcing and customer contact management services to Fortune 1000 and leading global companies.

He is active on the board of trustees of the University of Tampa, where the college of business bears his name.
