Find haunting art at Emporium's Spooktacular mixer

Published: October 21, 2009

Wear a costume and vie for prizes at the Spooktacular Art Mixer from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Tampa Artist Emporium.

In addition to the costume contest, the free event will feature adult style treats and psychic readings by metaphysical minister Liana Virella-Badillo, all within a setting that is chock full of original works by more than 100 gallery artists.

Usually the monthly mixers at the Emporium serve as fundraisers for a local charity, but that's not the case this time.

"This is just for fun," said gallery owner Sandra Jarrettt. "There's no charity involved. But we do have the MacDonald Training Center Wall, where students in their art program sell their original works. They are full-time in our gallery now."

Jarrett usually makes up goodie baskets for prizes and will do the same this time. They've been popular at past events.

"Our events have just been really fun with a good turnout," she said. "We raised over $300 for the firemen's museum at our last (Oct. 2) mixer."

In addition to the ongoing exhibit of works by artists who lease space, the Emporium each month hosts a themed exhibit geared to give emerging local artists a chance to show their work. This month's theme is ping-pong paddle art and one area of the store is dedicated to a display of these decorated flat wooden surfaces.

The Emporium is in the Starbucks Plaza at 3415 Bay to Bay Blvd. For information, go to www .tampaartistemporium.com or call the store at (813) 835-0212.
