Museum hosts Crescent Dinner

UT CAMPUS - Guests at the H.B. Plant Museum's recent Crescent Dinner went back to 1921 with the meal and music.

The dinner for about 150 guests featured a menu from the Tampa Bay Hotel. Opened in 1891 as a railroad destination, the hotel now houses the University of Tampa and the museum. The meal included lettuce hearts, stuffed chicken breasts, spinach and a delicate white cake.

The tables were adorned with fresh-cut greenery from the university's grounds, and museum board members provided china and silverware from their personal collections.

During the dinner, hosted by Scott and Jill Kelley, pianist Paul Wilborn played period classics by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin.

Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio told the guests: "This is the icon of Tampa; the minarets, the museum. No matter what we build, and how cool it is, nothing beats this great building. It's the heart of Tampa."

She also praised the staff and volunteers. "It's a great board of directors, with one of the most capable and competent executive directors, Cynthia Gandee," she said.

Renee Vaughn, wife of University of Tampa president Ron Vaughn, is president of the museum's board of trustees.
