Public Safety Personnel Honored As Heroes Hillsborough County's law enforcement, fire and rescue, and other public safety officers were honored May 1 at the 14th annual Our Heroes Luncheon, sponsored by Sykes Enterprises. More than 2,000 guests at the Tampa Convention Center watched as representatives from six law enforcement agencies and four fire departments were honored at the Heroes Table. Special recognition was given to Sgt. Ron Harrison, the deputy killed in the line of duty in August 2007. His daughter Ronnee Harrison represented him. Proceeds from the event benefit the Coy L. Sykes Memorial Scholarships, awarded to children of law enforcement personnel. The 2008 scholarship recipients were also recognized. They are Amanda Gilbertsen, James Wolff, Alyssa Martinez, Kaleigh Hill, Daniel Kiefer, Michelle Cimo, Stephen Frey and Tyler Metcalf. ...more

TAMPA BAY AREA Envirofuels Asks For Delay The Tampa Port Authority staff has recommended approving a pair of three-month lease extensions sought by Port Sutton Envirofuels, which wants more time to study how it could use the site where it plans to build an ethanol plant. Envirofuels also wants its permitted use to include biofuel and ethanol-related uses, including production, tank storage, blending and distribution. TAMPA BAY AREA Port Revenue Declines Tampa Port Authority revenue and net income are running behind budget projections for the first fiscal quarter ended Dec. 31. But port officials, who have acknowledged that 2008 will be a challenging fiscal year because of problems with the economy, said Tuesday that the report is too early to raise concerns because there are nine months to go. Fiscal first-quarter net income was $14.9 million, 3.3 percent lower than the year-ago period and 12.4 percent less than prorated first-quarter budget figures, which do not account for seasonal highs and lows. ...more
